Between recognising an extraordinary career and the right to criticise decisions and behaviour, this essay argues that accountability does not require humiliation and that respect does not imply idolatry. A life cannot be reduced to one bad moment. And the greatness of a society is also measured by the humanity with which it treats its heroes when they no longer live up to its expectations.",
